A Comprehensive Overview

As the sound-producing mechanism for the bassoon, the reed is a vital component in the sound of the entire instrument. While pre-manufactured reeds are widely available for purchase at music stores, this one-size-fits-all option hardly does justice to the unique needs of the musician and the piece. Many bassoonists, including seasoned professional bassoonist Eric Arbiter, instead choose to craft their own reeds. A nuanced and difficult craft to master, reed-making involves specialized machinery and necessitates special attention to the thickness, and even topography, of the reed itself. When done correctly, however, this process results in a reed that not only produces a more beautiful sound, but also holds up to even the most demanding musical performances.

Build informed performances

Knowing what is happening in the orchestra during important excerpts is key to building a proper interpretation. These trios allow the student to hear what is happening without the need of an entire orchestra.

At the request of instructors at Juilliard, Mannes College, and Manhattan School of Music, many of the most common audition excerpts have been arranged for three bassoons and are sold as a collection.

The series "Technical Basics of the Oboe" was published for the first time in 2015, and in 2020 the Bassoon Exercise Booklet was added to this series. The aim of all these booklets is to help the player to acquire/learn a systematic technique on the instrument - in this case the bassoon. In my opinion, technical exercises should be kept out of the literature as much as possible and practised separately so that the joy of music and music-making is not overlaid with too many technical aspects. The booklet is structured in such a way that 8 pages are devoted to one key in various exercises. The so-called modular principle can/should be applied at any time. The order of exercises given in the booklets is only a suggestion. In the case of difficult keys, it is even extremely useful to begin, for example, with the exercise: "1.4. range of fifths" before practising the actual scale 1.1. This way you can approach the new/difficult key by using a smaller range. The exercises are structured in such a way that both precision and speed are practised. Of course, the 8-page range of keys could be expanded considerably, but these 8 pages should not only offer a lot, but also be doable. It is frustrating if you can never be "finished". This should be avoided at all costs. So it is important to find a balance between: - Sustainable improvement in the technical area through intensive work as well as - Tasks that are feasible/manageable.

The 19th century was a time of upheaval in the history of woodwind instrument making, as the oboe, flute, clarinet and bassoon were fundamentally reformed and numerous new instruments were developed. In many orchestras, however, older designs were able to survive for a long time, as the new models were only hesitantly accepted. This report from a conference of the Institute of Musicology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich sheds light on this diversity, which is lost today, and places it in a comprehensive context. Experts from musicology, music instrument museums and music practice approach the extraordinarily rich innovations in woodwind instrument making of the 19th century from various perspectives. Innovative technical solutions and new instruments are examined as examples, but local traditions are also examined. With contributions by Klaus Aringer, Geoffrey Burgess, Beatrix Darmstädter, Josef Focht, Heike Fricke, Klaus Hubmann, Gunther Joppig, James Kopp, Thomas Reil, Albert Rice, Sebastian Werr, Henrik Wiese and Ann-Katrin Zimmermann. To the editor: Sebastian Werr studied musicology at the FU Berlin and the University of Milan; he received his doctorate at the University of Bayreuth, where he also habilitated in 2008. In addition to the history of woodwind instruments, his research focuses on music theater from the 17th to the 21st century and the social history of music. In 2011 he published an extensive catalog volume on the "History of the Bassoon" with the Wißner-Verlag.

We have summarised our ideas and exercises in the form of targeted tips for independent practice in "fagottbasis". Suggestions from our teachers and colleagues, whom we would like to thank explicitly, have been combined with our own ideas and experiences. We make no claim to completeness, since, as is well known, many roads lead to Rome.

It is extremely important to us to deal critically with "fagottbasis". Even if one cannot always agree, we hope that the systematic discussion of the matter will bring success. The constant challenge and the will to fill the daily practice with new insights and experiences are the basis for later free and relaxed music making.

"fagottbasis" is intended to provide help, open up new perspectives and be a competent companion for daily practising. However, it is essential to think along when practising, avoids pointless and inefficient work and leads more quickly to satisfying results. The prerequisite for this is open-mindedness and honesty towards oneself. Of course, "fagottbasis" cannot and should not replace a good teacher in any case!
